- The guide said it with a smile. Whatever you do, do not be the last person in line. Everyone laughed. Then everyone shuffled, very casually, towards the front. Except Mara, who was busy taking a photograph.
- The tour moved on into the next chamber. Low stone. Dripping. The candlelight barely reached the walls. Behind Mara, she heard a footstep. Heavy. A boot on wet stone.
- She turned. Nothing but the dark of the last room. She hurried to catch up, and the footsteps hurried too.
- Something touched her heel. Then her ankle. Cold fingers, curious, like a child testing ice. She did not scream. She was too frightened to scream.
- When the tour came back up into the street, the guide counted heads. Fourteen, he said. That is odd. I started with thirteen.
- Mara looked at the photograph she had taken in the last room. It was too dark to see much. Only a face, very close to the lens, smiling with far too many teeth.
