- There is a canal where the water is green and slow, and the trees are hung with dolls. Old dolls, sun-faded, rain-swollen, missing arms and eyes. A boatman once told me why he never lets his passengers count them.
- If you count them, he said, they count you. And then they know exactly how many of you came, and how many go home.
- One summer evening a young man laughed at him and counted out loud. Two hundred and ten dolls. The boatman turned the boat around without a word, and poled hard for home.
- The young man laughed all the way back. He laughed while he paid. He laughed walking up the lane in the dusk.
- The next morning, the boatman passed the island again. He did not need to count. He could see there was a new doll hanging in the trees, and it was still smiling.
