  1. Rain blurred the windows when Daniel noticed the untouched glass. Every other table had been cleared. Beside it sat a man in a dark coat, his hands resting flat on the wood. Daniel asked if he was waiting for someone. The man nodded towards the window. In its reflection Daniel could see the glass, the empty chair and himself standing beside it. He could not see the man. He decided the rain had distorted the view.
  2. The man slid a coin across the table. It made no sound. One more, he said. For the road. Daniel glanced towards the door, where rain swept against the threshold. When he looked back, the man had gone. His coat remained on the chair. From inside it came a faint knocking, as though someone were tapping on a tiny wooden box. Daniel lifted the coat. Beneath it, the chair was wet. Not with rain. With water cold enough to numb his fingers.
  3. He put the coat down and backed away. The knocking stopped. A voice behind his ear said, You have not brought mine. In the window, the man was visible at last. He stood behind Daniel, smiling, while the room itself remained empty. Daniel left the glass where it was. Years later he still checks every dark window before going to bed. Last night there were two glasses in his reflection. And a hand, waiting for him to pick one up.
